BIOM 421: OSMOTIC ENGINE
SCHEMATICS
Our model includes four different inputs in order for velocity to occur. The first is water flowing in and out of the cell, which creates the direction of flow for the cancer cell. The chemical potential of water and flux of ions are the second and third inputs for velocity. As the chemical potential of water increases, the cancer cell will move towards the positive potential. The same idea can be seen with the influx of ions, as the influx of positive charge increases, the cancer cell will move towards it. The osmotic pressure will also dictate which direction the cell will move. However, because the cancer cell can repolarize itself, depending on which end is polarized the cell will change directions.
